About Sympathy Words
Sympathy Words started with a simple observation: when someone we care about loses a loved one, most of us freeze. We want to say something — anything — that helps. But the words won't come, and so we say nothing, or we say the wrong thing, and we carry that regret for years.
We believe silence is never the answer. A short, sincere message — even an imperfect one — tells the grieving person they are not alone.
What We Do
We write and carefully curate sympathy messages for every situation: the loss of a mother, a father, a spouse, a friend, a pet. Every message on this site is written with care, reviewed for tone, and tested against one question: would this actually comfort someone?
Our Approach
- Respect first. Grief is not a marketing opportunity. We never use sensational language or pressure anyone.
- Specificity over cliché. We avoid empty phrases like "everything happens for a reason." We aim for words that acknowledge real pain.
- Practical guidance. Alongside every message, we share honest advice on what to say, what to avoid, and how to actually show up for someone.
Who We Are
Sympathy Words is a small independent project run by people who have sat on both sides of grief — who have received cards that carried them through dark weeks, and who have stood in front of a blank card wondering what to write. This site is our way of making sure no one has to face that blank card alone.
We are not medical or mental-health professionals. If you or someone you know is struggling with grief, please reach out to a professional — you deserve real support.
